About Steve
& The Sage Approach

For Steve Wallin,  Asheville and the surrounding area has always been home.  Steve and his wife Patricia grew up in the remote mountains of Madison County, North Carolina. Steve's wisdom and desire to guide future homeowners by providing sage advice is the culmination of over three decades of experience working in the construction industry, and over two decades as a North Carolina License General Contractor working specifically in the mountains of western North Carolina. Steve is a General Contractor holding a North Carolina Unlimited building license.

Steve started his career as middle grade math and science teacher.  After seven years, he realized teaching was not his passion, and spent the next 10 years learning a variety of skills that would ultimately result in a diverse skill set few in the construction industry can claim.  Steve owned a sawmill for a period of time and learned a tremendous amount regarding business and building relationships with customers, employees and subcontractors.  He then worked as a purchasing and materials manager for two fortune 500 companies, dramatically enhancing his knowledge of business and team building.

In early 2000 Steve became a licensed General Contractor and began building speculative ("spec") homes as a way to supplement his income.  He instantly fell in love with the processes, the people and the relationships. Many of those relationships still exist to this day.  Steve eventually developed his business around a mix of spec homes and custom home building, including the specialized art of log home construction. Steve was one of the first in Western North Carolina to open a full-service custom home design center, encompassing fine hardwoods and cabinetry in his skillset. In later years, Steve worked for other regional builders leading some of the most dynamic and successful “on your lot” home building teams in the Southeast.  To date, Steve has personally overseen the turnkey construction of well over 400 homes.

In 2022, Steve decided to step away from the high volume world of production building, and focus on individual Client’s needs related to residential construction. For Steve, it's no longer about business plans and projections.  His focus is getting back to the roots of why he entered this field of work: helping families bring their dream homes to life.  His focus is ensuring the services he provides are in line with the customer’s expectations and timeline, and a willingness to honestly tell the Client whether Sage Construction and Consulting is the best match for their needs. Whether it is a few hours of consultation, or a site evaluation in order to make decisions related to the potential purchase of property, or even a turnkey build from scratch, Steve has the ability to focus on the Client, and deliver results.
